Chapter Eleven

Alicia woke up shivering in the thick frigid silence filling her bedroom. No buzz of electricity. No warm air blowing from the heater vent. Her flannel pajamas and the blanket and quilt pulled to her nose did little to block the cold air from slicing through her.

Climbing out of bed, she wrapped the quilt around herself and shuffled to the window to push back the curtains. Fat flakes flocked in ice lashed the windowpane in a diagonal slant and blended with the low-hung steel gray sky. Snow more than a foot deep and growing piled on the ground and on the heavily bowed limbs of the trees surrounding the cabin. It looked like a gigantic snow globe had enveloped the cabin during the night and been given a vigorous shake.

She crossed the room to the light switch and flipped it on. Nothing.

Slivers of concern stood shoulder to shoulder with the battalion of goosebumps prickling her skin until she reminded herself that there was no need for worry. She and Rey had the fireplace for heating and cooking, and plenty of wood, food, water, and—

God! Rey had only the two blankets on the couch and the clothes he’d worn to bed. She shot from the room to check on him and start the fire.

A blanket around his shoulders, Rey knelt at the fireplace, building a fire in the grate. He looked up when she came in.

“Guess your buddy, the sheriff, was telling the truth. The power’s out,” he said in a cloud of breath, and she swore she heard his teeth chattering.

“I noticed,” she responded and joined him at the fireplace. “Here, let me do that.”

“I got it, but would you make coffee? The hotter the better. I saw a metal coffee pot in the cabinet.”

“You mean that quaint piece of Americana decor?”

He grinned up at her. “Your coffee will kill anything growing on it.”

“Yeah, okay. But first, I’m putting on more clothes. I’m freezing.”

When she came back into the room, Rey had pulled on the freshly washed hoodie and sweats he’d worn on their trek outside.

“Here are more clothes if you need it,” she said and dropped a pile of Jon’s sweats, T-shirts, socks, and hoodies on the couch, then headed to the kitchen.

During breakfast, Rey was uncharacteristically quiet and looked like he was thinking hard about something. Their kiss? Was he regretting it? She had tried all night long to regret it but failed.

“Hey, you,” she said, nudging his leg with her foot. “You okay?”

His gaze left the fire and found hers. “Yeah. Why?”

“You didn’t make fun of my coffee or cooking this morning,” she said with a grin…that he didn’t return.

“Alicia…I had planned to leave today, but with the storm… Guess you’re stuck with me a little longer.”

A chill seized her heart at his news and stripped her smile. “It would have been foolish to leave. You’re not healed yet.”

Although that was true, it also was true that he was well enough to drive out of here without passing out behind the wheel or to ride out with her driving him.
